dichotomy
Just before the parking lot at my electrologist’s office there’s a section of road that runs between a hospital and it’s parking deck. At each crosswalk there is a large, neon yellow “yield” sign accompanied by flashing lights that says “Must Yield to Pedestrians.”
On Wednesday I came upon this stretch to discover a white SUV completely stopped at one of these intersections. The “yield” sign was flashing, but there were no pedestrians to yield to.
As I approached the intersection myself, a single person walked up to the crosswalk, and just as he put his foot into the road, the “yield” sign stopped flashing. In sync with the lights, the white SUV started driving, cutting the pedestrian off in the process. The person was yielding to the sign, not to the pedestrian. I stopped, waived the now hesitant man to cross the road, and he politely waived back and crossed.
This morning I watched a squirrel perfectly time sprinting across a two lane road.
